If you’re like me then you like your beer with color and flavor. Not only does the Twin Cities have a great local brew scene, it’s about to get a whole lot better.
What’s been holding a lot of home brewers back is leasing up space, especially in Minneapolis where in order to sell brew and sell your own beer, you had to open up a brew pub. That was then.
This is now as the City of Minneapolis has passed an ordinance that would allow brewers to sell direct and by-pass a distributer.
Explanation from MSPBJ:
The ordinance, sponsored by Councilman Gary Schiff, allows licensed brewers to sell 64-ounce or 750-milliliter containers of beer, called “growlers,” out of their locations.
Will there be an explosion in the local Minneapolis brewery scene as now that the city council passed “Brew Beer Here” ordinance?
Short answer, possibly. I can already tell by the amounts of local brewer’s I follow Twitter tweeting about out looking for commercial space to lease.
Also from the pre-vote StarTrib:
“It’s huge,” Sowards said. He’s one of several young Minneapolis-based microbrewers hoping to take advantage of the change. All have chosen Minneapolis names and plan to open or shift their operations here.
Take a look at local beer start-ups Surly, Flat Earth Brewing, they got their start by selling “growlers” out of their brewery but they are located in Brooklyn Park and St. Paul respectively. Surly no longer can sell growlers because they reached a State limit based on how much they brew each year and are on their way to being a regional brewery.
So here’s to good brew being found in Minneapolis!
